U.S. Constitution
The U.S. Constitution is the supreme law of the land, and I will respect and defend it as such, even in cases when I don't agree with something.
The original intent of the Constitution shall govern all branches of government. It is not a "living document." Judicial activism undermines the Constitution.
My thoughts on a specific few Amendments:
- First Amendment: Political correctness, Net Neutrality, and the Fairness Doctrine are all threats to the First Amendment.
- Second Amendment: It specifically states that "the right of the people to keep and bear arms" and thus permits the individual ownership of firearms; however, the states may implement reasonable regulation to ensure public safety. (For example, banning purchase to convicted felons.)
- Tenth Amendment: See my thoughts on States' Rights.
- Seventeenth Amendment: I feel the 17th Amendment detracts from Senatorial representation of the entire state. When Senators are chosen by high-population areas, those in smaller sparsely-populated regions of the state go unrepresented. I would like to see this process revert to the original method of choosing Senators, so that all can have equal representation. This would be accomplished by repealing the 17th Amendment.
